12/11/2007 - Mansfield Town 3 Lewes 0

FOR fans who believe in omens, the sight of Michael and Rory Boulding becoming the first brothers to score in the same Mansfield match for a century is sure to set pulses racing.

Because the last time it happened, courtesy of Billy and Jimmy Wheatley in 1910-1911, it was in the same season that Stags put together the most successful FA Cup run in their early history.

Mansfield boss Billy Dearden has made no secret he would love to improve league form and give a decent show in football's famous competition.

With no big club scalp on his CV, he would go down in history as the mastermind behind 2007-08's biggest shock.

And he knows one more win could give his charges the chance to do that.

It took a solid, if unspectacular performance, by the Stags to make it through to round two and without the feat of the Bouldings, the game was destined to be a forgettable occasion.

Despite a spirited effort from a Lewes side playing two divisions lower in the pyramid system, the game was by no means a classic.

And once Mansfield had taken the lead after the half-hour mark, one of those famous FA Cup shocks was not on the cards.

Both sides struggled to get the ball under control in the swirling wind.

No doubt, the hosts were not helped by the three changes to their side forced on them by injuries to Alex John-Baptiste (back), Nathan Arnold (ankle) and Simon Brown.

That led to a recall for Gareth Jelleyman, a first appearance since March for Jonathan D'Laryea and a debut for Rory Boulding. The reshuffle saw Lee Bell switch to right-back and Johnny Mullins move into the middle to partner skipper Jake Buxton.

The most significant moment of the first 25 minutes proved to be the booking of Ian Sempemba for pulling back Michael Boulding, as the defender was later to get a second and with it a red.

Mansfield's inability to get the ball down on the floor and pass with any fluidity was beginning to frustrate the crowd when they made the breakthrough.

Matt Hamshaw sprayed the ball out to Rory Boulding, whose cross bisected Lewes keeper Steve Williams and the visiting defence for brother Michael to stab home his 11th and easiest goal of the season.

Five minutes from the break Boulding junior's day got even better when he picked up Hamshaw's incisive pass to drill under Williams from the right-hand side of the box.

Two goals to the good at the break, Mansfield did not impose themselves on their opposition quite as much as Dearden had hoped in the second period.

They had the better of the possession and one or two half-chances, but did not cut Lewes open as the home supporters had hoped.

In a bid to get back into the game, the Sussex side threw on an extra forward in the closing stages. But the dismissal of Simpemba, for holding back Michael Boulding for a second time, ended the game as a contest.

As the gaps began to open, it was a question of how many the Stags would go on to score.

In the end, they managed just one more when Ian Holmes came on for Rory Boulding and scored his first Mansfield goal with only his second touch of the ball.

Once again, Hamshaw was involved, this time crossing to the near post where the former Matlock man got his head to the ball and looped it over the stranded Williams.

Hamshaw almost put the seal on an excellent performance when his marauding run ended with a shot that Williams did well to push away.

Full-time brought generous applause for Lewes from the crowd.

The Rooks gave everything and returned to the south coast with their heads held high.

The postponement of next week's clash with Wrexham due to international call-ups means the Stags have a two-week rest until Rochdale on November 24.

With Brown set to miss the next few weeks, whether Rory Boulding is given another chance to prove his worth at Spotland remains to be seen.

But should he retain his place, it is surely not the last time we will see the Boulding one-two help Mansfield to victory.

Back in the Wheatley brothers' days, non-league Stags started out in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup and made it to the fourth qualifying round stage.

How the Bouldings and Dearden would love to match that.
